Season of Connection

As the holidays approach, we look forward to the traditions that bring comfort and meaning to our lives: gathering around the table with family and friends, sharing favorite meals, and making memories. Food brings people together. It nourishes us, sparks conversation, and especially here in the Driftless Region, reminds us of the importance of community.

It is fitting to begin my role as General Manager of the Viroqua Food Co+op during a season of connection and participation. The co-op's Annual Owners Meeting and Annual Election in October are powerful reminders that people have a voice in shaping the institutions and communities they value—the principle at the very heart of the cooperative model.

I am honored to join an organization rooted in local food, sustainable agriculture, community ownership, and democratic participation. In more than 25 years working in the cooperative, fair trade, and natural foods sectors, I have seen how businesses can be more than places of commerce. They can strengthen local economies, support farmers and producers, create meaningful jobs, and build resilient communities. That belief inspires my work and drew me to this amazing opportunity.

In uncertain times, people need places they can count on. The Viroqua Food Co+op is that kind of place, a welcoming community hub where neighbors connect, local farmers and makers find a strong partner, and our shared values guide everyday choices.

As a community-owned cooperative, we can show what a people-centered economy looks like by strengthening regional food systems, expanding access to healthy food, supporting local producers, and building resilience.

This issue celebrates what makes Viroqua special: gathering, sharing meals, supporting local artisans, giving thoughtful gifts, and participating in co-op life. Together, these moments weave the fabric of our community.

A food co-op is more than a store; it reflects a community’s values and shared purpose. I look forward to listening, learning, and working with our owners, workers, and community partners as we build the future together.

Thank you for choosing the co-op.

In cooperation,

Joe Riemann, General Manager"A food co-op is more than a store; it reflects a community’s values

and shared purpose."
