Pinecone Bird Feeder
These fun feeders use pinecones as a structure to hold the rest of the ingredients. Next time you’re on a walk, pick up a couple to use in this crafty bird feeder. Our grind-in-store peanut butter is perfect for the birds and squirrels as there are no added ingredients, just pure peanut-y goodness! Choose from a range of nuts and seeds from our bulk department and get just what you need for the outer coating. Make sure to only choose raw, unsalted products!
Ingredients
Fresh ground peanut butter
Nuts and seeds, raw and unsalted or birdseed
Twine
Tie a piece of twine to the top of the pinecone.
Using a spoon or a knife, scoop peanut butter into the cracks and crevices of the pinecone. Use as much peanut butter as you like. The more you use, the more nuts and seed will stick to the outside.
Roll the sticky cone in the seeds and nuts to coat the outside of the pinecone.
Hang the feeder somewhere out of reach of deer!
Many local birds rely on berries and fruits. Try adding raw cranberries or unsweetened dried fruits.
Popcorn Garlands
Popcorn garlands are made of fresh popcorn without salt or butter. Mix in other ingredients like dried berries and cereals to get creative and colorful with the decorations! Use a thin cotton thread to make decorations biodegradable. Drape over trees and fence lines for a festive feel and to draw in a flurry of fluttering finches.
Use air-popped corn or this easy stovetop method:
Ingredients
2 tbsp High quality unrefined coconut oil
1/2 cup Popcorn kernels
1 bag Local cranberries
In a large, lidded pot (heavier is better), heat the oil on medium heat.
Place two kernels in the oil with space between them and replace the lid. Once both have popped your oil is ready to go!
Remove from the heat and pour in the rest of the kernels. Replace the lid and swirl the kernels in the hot oil for 1 minute.
Return the pot to the heat and keep swirling occasionally. The popcorn will begin to pop. Once the popping slows (About 1 pop every few seconds), remove from the heat and transfer to a serving bowl.
