A Simple Start for New Growers
Thinking about growing your own vegetables for the first time? You’re not alone! Starting a garden is a fun, rewarding way to connect with your food and enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting something you grew yourself. The best part? You don’t need to know everything to get started. All it takes is a little curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Start by thinking about what you love to eat. Salad greens, cherry tomatoes, and herbs like basil or parsley are all great beginner choices that grow well in our local zones (check out the previous page to see how you can find your zone!). Whether you’ve got a sunny backyard, a raised bed, or a few containers on your porch, you can start small and still enjoy fresh, homegrown flavor.
Choose a spot that gets at least six hours of sun per day, and don’t worry about growing a huge variety right away. A few strong plants, well cared for, can produce a lot and help build your confidence for seasons to come. Focus on good soil, consistent watering, and checking in on your plants regularly to see how they’re doing.
When it comes to choosing what to plant, the Viroqua Food Co+op is a great place to start. We offer local and organic plant starts in our greenhouse, grown by farmers and producers right here in our community. These healthy, hardy starts make it easier for new growers to jump in and see success early on.
If you’re unsure what to pick or how to begin, we’re here to help! Our staff includes seasoned gardeners who love sharing tips, suggestions, and stories from their own gardens. Don’t be shy about asking questions or seeking advice - it’s part of the fun!
Gardening is a journey. You’ll make discoveries, maybe a few mistakes, and hopefully enjoy some delicious results along the way. Every gardener starts somewhere, and every season is a chance to learn something new.
So go ahead! Dig in, start small, and let your garden grow with you. Remember, your friends at the co-op are here to support you every step of the way. Happy planting!
