The Driftless Stitch

Meet Jill, local artist and sewist.

Nestled in the rolling countryside outside of Westby, we met up with Jill Dickson to check out her studio and learn about this incredible local artist and businesswoman. Jill is the owner and sewist of The Driftless Stitch, a local business specializing in products made from upcycled fabrics. From wine-bottle-carry-bags to aprons and sling bags, the co-op carries Driftless Stitch products all year. The winter months bring the much anticipated hats and mittens. Jill has an incredible talent for mixing and matching fabrics and patterns from various items of clothing that she thrifts to create unique and one-of-a-kind pieces that are sure to delight. Even more fun is that each apron or wine bottle holder comes with a kitchen implement or wine key to make sure you are prepared for your cooking adventures! Read on to learn about Jill and the fabulous work that she does right here in the Driftless.

How long have you been sewing and how did you get started?

My passion for sewing was sparked as a child watching my Nana working her magic as a seamstress creating wedding dresses. She was inspirational, always reminding me I could do anything. I fell in love with sewing and creating with my hands. This has been a true gift.

Are you the sole person behind Driftless Stitch or do you have others working with you?

I am the sole person behind the creative/design/sewing process, but I do have a few ladies who help me out when I’m overloaded.

How has the co-op influenced your business and contributed to its success?

The co-op has been a big part of my business since the beginning. A conversation about mittens with Crystel, the co-op's mercantile buyer, was really the spark that turned into Driftless Stitch.

Why did you start using recycled materials for your projects and why do you prefer them?

My kids inspire me every day to recycle and upcycle. Our planet needs help. My goal is to create “new looking” items from recycled materials. Consumers need to see this can be done. It needs to be the norm. I try to keep my prices low so purchasing an upcycled product is more inviting than a mass produced or fast fashion product.

Have you had any interesting feedback from customers?

People love the concept of upcycled merchandise that can look store bought new. They love the concept of handmade merchandise. My hope is to inspire people to upcycle and learn more about the process. It’s so fulfilling and exciting to create something of your own.

What would you like co-op shoppers to know about Driftless Stitch and your products?

The Driftless Stitch produces sustainable, clean, quality handcrafted merchandise

What will you sell at the co-op this holiday season?

Holiday shopping is always fun. The go-tos are mittens, bags and always a crazy apron. Let your inner holiday shine with a fun apron. It always brings a smile.

What is one unexpected challenge you encountered as a small business owner?

There is never enough time. Never.

What is the most interesting thing someone has asked you to make?

My son in law just asked me to create a butt warmer sling for sitting in a tree while hunting. Stay tuned. The request is usually mittens made from a loved one's sweater. The inside is made from the loved one's fleece shirt then the outside from a sweater or scarf. It's really very touching to create something so special. I’ve also made a bucket hat from a loved one's shirt.

What are your future goals for Driftless Stitch?

My future goals are to start making ball caps. Fun colored upcycled hats for sports, hiking or biking. I also would like to attend local farmers markets and festivals. I also think “mitten sewing” parties would be amazing. Kind of like a sip and paint - this would be a bring your sweater and sew mittens together.
