Greetings Dear VFC Community!
As I write this, fields are being worked, greenhouses are filling up, and sheep and cows are being let out on pasture. It has been a long winter and a long year and our efforts are turned toward the growing season. As a food co-op, we place our greatest aim on providing our members and community with healthy food. Our co-op and Garden Center are here to help grace our gardens and tables with the sweet summer celebration of flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Vote for three Candidates:
September 14 - October 14, 2020
VFC Owners with a current email address on file receive a link via email to the online ballot that is open for voting starting September 14.
All other owners receive a postcard with a link to the voting site. Paper ballots are made available, but only in the store upon request.
There are three open seats. Two are 3-year terms, one is a 2-year seat to finish the term of Tonya Wagner. Tonya moved out of the area shortly after her term started in 2019 and the VFC Board appointed Karen Mischel to fill her seat for one year.

It was exactly one year ago when I was approached about running for the Viroqua Food Co+op’s Board of Directors. I have so much love for this community and all that it has to offer. It has an accepting nature that nurtures and supports the growth of individuals and families. The Viroqua Food Co+op is a priceless centerpiece to Southwest Wisconsin and strives to enrich the lives of all of those it touches whether as a visitor, a shopper, a local community member, or a farmer.

Red Beets from Driftless Organics
Wellness Wednesday THIS WEEK includes BEETS – & the red ones are still coming locally from Driftless Organics! Beets are an ancient, prehistoric food that grew naturally along coastlines in North Africa, Asia & Europe. They have many health properties, including being super antioxidents due to their bright colored flavonoids – so they help fight off cancer & detoxify your inner environment. They help lower blood pressure & give extra stamina, as well. There are many ways to eat them: raw in salads, juiced, roasted in the oven, or even chopped up and put into some yummy borscht soup. One better, click here to get our Chocolate Beet Cake recipe!

Live food supports lively health. A quick glimpse at their incredible health benefits:
- Phytochemicals in them improve how well vitamin C works in the body, thus gifting improved immunity.
- They contain chromium, which assists in regulating blood sugar.
- For centuries, they have been used to reduce inflammation & heal infections.
- Enjoy sliced onions with your food? If yes, rejoice! Raw onion encourages production of good cholesterol (HDL), thus keeping your heart healthy.

Last fall, the VFC Board of Directors announced a new Microlending Initiative. Through this program, an individual or farm that is currently selling their product to the VFC is eligible for an interest-free loan of up to $3000, to be paid back within one year. Through the Microlending Initiative we hope to strengthen small, local farms that supply the Co-op and create opportunities to improve their operations. The Microlending Initiative was developed under the direction of the Board of Directors by the Microlending Committee, which consists of two VFC Board Members and two VFC Managers.
