Viroqua Food Co+op Blog
Our Mission is clear when it comes to supporting locally produced foods. Sourcing locally strengthens our small-town economy, builds sustainability and ongoing regional food security. It’s important to note how the resiliency we create through our support of local served us during the pandemic. The relationships we have with local producers kept our shelves full of fresh foods, even as the regular channels for food distribution were strained from unpredictable consumer buying. You may have noticed that products are still sometimes unavailable – but local, seasonal and fresh produce is always at the VFC!Read More
Look for the Deals
We know that shoppers are always looking for a good deal and we’re here to help you find that deal every time you shop. Our shelves have a complete spectrum of products. Admittedly, some specialty products hit the high end of fanciness! But we work to balance product selections with a range of quality and organic standards at the lowest price possible with plenty of choices in between.Read More
Earth Day was founded by Wisconsin’s own Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970. According to EarthDay.org, 20 million Americans (at the time, 10% of the total population of the United States) took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies on that first Earth Day in 1970. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment.Read More
Ownership is a big deal at the Viroqua Food Co+op! The 4,213 folks that have invested $75 in the Co-op are the owners of VFC. We’re a community-owned enterprise that exists to serve you. In return, our owners keep profits and wages in our community and support a wide range of community organizations, small-scale agricultural producers, and programs like Co-op Community Fund and Micro-lending Initiative. October is Co-op Month and it’s a time where we give even more attention to celebrating co-ops and expressing gratitude to VFC Owners for your ongoing patronage.Read More

One of the outcomes of construction while “open for business” is that we don’t get the big reveal at the end. Where all the choices made with the pressures of mission and budget come together to represent our best efforts and is unveiled all at once. Instead, although thrilling, we’re experiencing nonstop change day-by-day. The plan is taking shape! For those of us with blueprints in hand, it’s a little easier to understand how it all fits together, but for many shoppers – it’s a puzzle.Read More
Co-op Principle 1: Open and Voluntary Membership
Like cooperatives around the world, our co-op is built on a set of values that include equality, solidarity, and caring for others. The first of the Seven International Cooperative Principles states that cooperatives are voluntary organizations open to all, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination. Our mission reinforces this idea by declaring that we are “a center for community” and guides us “to create together a work of enduring value.”Read More
What will the expanded VFC look like? Fresh! Exciting! Delicious! Our expanded store will be a reflection of our Co-op Community. As we plan and prepare for the new space, we are inspired by our current store as well as co-ops across the country and get expert support and guidance from the Development Co-op (DC) Consulting Team. What do you want to see from your Co-op? Pop over to our website and leave a comment on the Board of Directors' page!
We are on track to begin the parking lots across Center Avenue in early September 2016. This part of the project is essential to complete before any work on the building begins. More convenient parking benefits the Co-op now and will create safety during construction that is slated for spring of 2017. All three sites – the store, the south parking lot, and the Sidie Lawn Care lot – will blend together when Center Avenue becomes a part of the VFC site.
